See my related post from two weeks ago, “The Bible acknowledges the existence of positive spirits and ghosts.”

I view our psychic abilities as a gift from the Holy Spirit, a divine energy that connects all of us—whether or not we still inhabit our bodies. While some denominations say that God only allowed prophecy and dream visions during biblical times, I’ve found no indication in the Bible that says these aspects of our intuition would stop occurring.

Because I view our sixth sense as the ability to tap into the Divine, I believe it’s a tool to further our spiritual growth or help others in crisis. I don’t see it as a way to make a million dollars on the stock market or to provoke negative energies.

The Old Testament is full of dreamers
Our inner critic is off when we’re sleeping. That’s why so many people experience intuition while they’re dreaming. For many, the only way they can receive intuitive messages is through dream and visions.

Biblical dreamers include the prophets Ezekiel and Daniel. Ezekiel saw “visions of God.” Daniel’s dreams were so substantive, he wrote down their details to accurately share them with others.

New Testament apostles recognized the gift of prophesy
Peter fell into a trance, seeing heaven open and hearing heavenly voices. Yet today, if a person went into a trance at a more narrowly focused church, he’d be ostracized.

Paul wrote a great deal about the spiritual gifts of clairvoyance, psychic abilities and mediumship. Of course, he didn’t use that wording, but it’s clear from First Corinthians that he saw those gifts as manifestations of the Holy Spirit. He wrote that God bestows the gifts of knowledge (clairvoyance means “all knowing”), of prophecy (psychic abilities to tap into future events) and distinguishing between spirits (mediumship—to communicate with the spirit world).

Of course, there are plenty of warnings in the Bible as well, but that makes perfect sense to me. Everything is a balance between good and bad, light and dark. And, the Bible wants us to be careful and use discernment, because evil is out there. But so is the good. We just have to be wise when tapping into our sixth sense.

As First Thessalonians, chapter five states: “Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophesy with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.”
